Allegany, NY-William A. "Bill" Splain of 1555 Four Mile Rd. passed away into the loving arms of his savior Jesus Christ on Thursday (April 30, 2009) in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.
Born December 28, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of Francis John and Jacqueline Frances Anderson Splain, Sr. On August 27, 1983 in the former Four Square Gospel Church in Olean he married Vivian A. Dickinson who survives.
Mr. Splain was raised and schooled in Brooklyn prior to moving to Allegany where he received an Associates Degree at Jamestown Community College. He continued his studies and became an ordained minister after which he became a pastor at the former Damascus Open Bible Church in Olean for six years. He then was a pastor at the Faith Fellowship Church in Sydney, OH prior to returning to Allegany. Up until his death he was working to achieve a Masters Degree in Biblical Counseling.
Years ago he established Splain Electric Co. in Olean which he operated until he was a trained electrical inspector with the new company name Connection Inspection in Allegany. Concurrently he owned and operated Bill's Firearms in Allegany.
His Christian faith was central to his life and his passion was for helping the less fortunate. He was a member of the Creekside Chapel (the former Free Methodist Church in Allegany) and the American Association of Christian Counselors. He loved traveling which led him to do missionary work in Alaska and he enjoyed listening to Christian music. He was also an avid hunter and for years piloted private planes in the area.
Surviving besides his wife are 2 daughters Cassandra J. (Jeffrey) Bertsch of Ft. Thomas, KY and Sarah J. Splain of Allegany; 2 sons Jeffrey E. Layton of Los Angeles, CA and Eric S. (Mary) Layton of Aloha, OR; 2 grandchildren Ethan J. Splain and Seth M. Bertsch; 6 brothers and sisters Jacqueline F. (Steven R.) Wilson of Franklinville, Regina Berman of Fort Worth, TX, Francis J. Splain, Jr. of Buffalo, Elizabeth R. Splain of Massapequa, Gerard T. (Victoria) Splain of New York, NY and Russell J. (Lucille) Splain of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 1 uncle Vincent F. Splain of Ravendon Springs, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews and a special friend and mentor Pastor Joseph Vance of Paducah, KY.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean this evening from 7-9pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday (May 2, 2009) at the Creekside Chapel, Five Mile Rd. Allegany from 10:00am until time of services at 11:00am. Rev. Ken Tesh, pastor, and Rev. Joseph Vance will co-officiate. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery, Olean. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Creekside Chapel.
