Obituary of Jack Blumenthal

Olean, NY Jack Blumenthal of 109 Virginia St. passed away peacefully Wednesday (February 13, 2013) at his home. Born July 1, 1919 in Manhattan, New York he was the son of Louis and Lena Miller Blumenthal. On August 3, 1967 he married Jennie Cauvel who survives. Upon graduation from Long Island University, Mr. Blumenthal served with the US Army as a second lieutenant during WWII where he was stationed in Australia. After his military service he moved to Olean where his father and he opened Blumenthal's Sporting Goods. He was later joined in business by his two sons until his retirement. He was one of the first retailers in the Olean area to offer electronics, audio visual supplies, computer sales and motorcycles. His lifelong avocation was photography, a passion he held since he was a young boy. He was instrumental in the formation of local camera clubs and he strongly supported the Niagara Frontier Regional Camera Club which honored him with a lifetime achievement award in 2012. He was a world traveler and along with his wife they gladly provided slide shows to many area groups. Surviving besides his wife are three children Howard (Jodi) Blumenthal of Bradford, PA, Michael (Darlene Goetzman) Blumenthal of Allegany and Amy (Julio) Alvarez-Perez, MD of Buffalo; five grandchildren Abigail, Aaron, Alex, Nando and Chris; one sister Vivian Danziger of Queens and several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday (February 16, 2013) from 11:00am until noon at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Funeral and committal services will begin at noon with Rev. William Allen and Rev. Kristen Allen, co-pastors of Christ United Methodist Church, to officiate. The family will continue to receive friends at a reception following the service at Christ United Methodist Church beginning at 1:00pm. Burial will then follow in Mt. View Cemetery, Olean. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Homecare and Hospice 1225 W. State St. Olean, NY 14760. Online condolences may be expressed at oleanfuneralhome.com.
