Obituary of Donald Underwood

Donald J. Underwood Olean, NY-Donald J. Underwood of 115 West Street died Saturday (January 30, 2010) in the Olean General Hospital after a long illness. Born August 15, 1920 in Hinsdale, NY he was the son of Elias J. and Edna Erdmann Underwood. On January 22, 1944 in Olean he married Bernice "Betty" Luzier who survives. They recently celebrated 66 years of marriage. Mr. Underwood was a lifelong resident of the Olean area and had been employed for 43 years as a machine operator for Clark Bros., later Dresser Rand prior to his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union Local #4601 Retirees Association and was a longtime participant in the ECHO program in Olean. Surviving besides his wife are 1 daughter Debora L. Thomson of Limestone; 1 son Frederick Underwood of Inverness, FL; 3 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (February 3, 2010) at 11:00am in the funeral home. Rev. Frank Hayman, pastor of the Allegany Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
