Carl A. Jones
Surprise, AZ--Carl A. Jones, formerly of Allegany died Thursday (December 4, 2008) in Del E. Webb Hospital in Sun City West, AZ.
Born August 17, 1918 in Allegany he was the son of Albert and Helen Ham Jones. On February 14, 1947 in Allegany he married Viola Whitney who predeceased him October 17, 1983.
Mr. Jones was a veteran of the US Army from 1939 to 1945 where he served during WWII as a Tech Sergeant with the 1st Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions on D-Day on June 6, 1944. He was also presented the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge on January 1, 1945.
He was a retired Quality Control Manager for the former Conap, Inc. in Olean after which he and his wife moved to Arizona in 1981. He was a life member of the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892 and was a life member of the Allegany Fire Department. He was also a 32nd degree Mason.
Surviving are 1 son Kevin (Pamela) Jones of Surprise, AZ; 2 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 1 sister Janice Hamelik of New York Mills and several niece and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Tuesday from 1-3pm. No formal funeral service will take place. Burial will follow at the Allegany Cemetery. The ritual team of the Allegany American Legion will accord military honors at the grave. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Allegany American Legion or to the Allegany Fire Department.
