"Loved by his many friends and family"
Olean, NY-- Larry J. Chiarenza, a resident of The Pines Healthcare Center for the past two years died Saturday (January 29, 2005) in the Olean General Hospital after a long illness.
Born December 8, 1938 in Bradford, PA he was the son of Joseph A. Chiarenza and Julia Patuto.
Mr. Chiarenza graduated from high school in Kenmore, NY and moved to Olean in 1962. He resided on 12th St. most of his life and also lived in the Olean House Apartments for two years prior to moving to The Pines in 2003. He had been employed for many years as a dishwasher at Hastas Restaurant on N. Union St. where he enjoyed conversations with his many friends. He was a volunteer for area sporting events including the Olean Midget Football League and as a scorekeeper for the Olean City Softball League. He was also a huge St. Bonaventure University basketball fan. He belonged to St. Mary of the Angels Church, was a frequent visitor to Tom’s News Stand, and he also enjoyed spending time in the Public Library. In 2004 he received the Olean Chamber of Commerce Good News Award in the Senior category.
Surviving are 2 sisters Justine Duprey of Carmichael, CA and her daughter and son Juliette Porro and Kevin Morgan, both of Sacramento. CA and Diane Riegert of Santa Barbara, CA and her daughter Jerusha Riegert, also of Santa Barbara, CA; 2 uncles Emil Chiarenza of Kane, PA and Walter Wainman of St. Petersburg, FL; several cousins including Nancy (Dr. Robert) Krall of Olean, Linda (Dave) Anderson of Bradford, PA, Carla (Lou) Stevens of Salamanca, Joan Festa of Alameda, CA, James Festa and Joseph Festa of San Jose, CA, Mia (Robert) Adkins of Palmetto, GA and Alford Hyldahl of Frewsburg, NY.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (February 2, 2005) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Friends of The Pines 2245 W. State St. Olean, NY 14760.
