"Retired Educator"
Allegany, NY-- Robert D. Stowell of 175 N. 2nd St. died Wednesday (July 27, 2005) in the Olean General Hospital.
Born April 12, 1920 in Ellicottville, NY he was the son of !DeBruce and Blanche Bastedo Stowell. On December 1, 1945 in Ellicottville, NY he married Agatha Nannen who predeceased him June 5, 1979.
Mr. Stowell was a 1939 graduate of Ellicottville Central School and received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. During WWII he served for the US Army as an officer in the European theatre. He then completed his studies at St. Bonaventure University where he received his Masters in Education and Guidance.
He first taught agriculture classes at Hinsdale Central School and in 1954 taught agriculture and industrial arts at Allegany Central School until his retirement in 1978. While at Allegany he coached junior varsity football and was an assistant varsity football coach for many years as well as serving as an advisor for the FFA organization at the school. He was also actively involved in the Cattaraugus County fairs for many years.
Mr. Stowell was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, the Allegany Knights of Columbus and the NYS Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are 2 daughters Jo-Carrol (James) Nalbone of Jamestown and Madelyn (Richard) Vossler of Allegany; 6 grandchildren Jacquelyn and Matthew Conroe, Matthew Nalbone, Stephanie (Shon) Harper, Nanette Vossler, Lisa (Gerald) Powless and Sara Vossler; 2 great grandchildren Katelyn Powless and Liam Conroe; 1 sister Marian Derkis of Atlanta, GA, several nieces and nephews and a friend Margery Fitzpatrick of Ellicottville.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a sister Jean Robbins.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday (July 30, 2005) beginning with a prayer service at noon in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30pm in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Ellicottville, NY. Memorials may be made to the Allegany Fire Department or to the Holy Cross Cemetery Veterans Monument Fund C/O Holy Name of Mary Church 22 Jefferson St. Ellicottville, NY 14731.
