Jean S. Casey
Olean, NY--Jean S. Casey, a recent resident of The Waters of Allegany and a former resident of Eden Heights in Olean since 1994, died peacefully Saturday (September 13, 2003).
Born March 22, 1916 in Port Allegany, PA she was the daughter of Lloyd E. and Edith Carlson Scherer. In November 1940 in Buffalo, NY she married William R. Casey, M.D. who predeceased her July 28, 1956.
Mrs. Casey was a graduate of Port Allegany High School and attended college at both Cornell University and Antioch College. She worked as a secretary for several years for the former Olean law office of John J. Petrucelli. She was a resident of Olean until 1965 at which time she moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL until 1969. Since 1955 she enjoyed her summer residence at Cuba Lake with her family until 1969 at which time she made it her year round home, moving back to Olean in 1985.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Olean and was a former member of the Bartlett Country Club where she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. In May of 1961 she was honored with the Olean mayor’s "Key to the City" in recognition of her community fundraising efforts. While at Cuba Lake she served on the board of directors of the Cuba Lake Cottage Owners Association. She will be remembered as a gracious woman who devoted her life to her family.
Surviving are 2 daughters Kathleen C. (Robert) Johnson of Olean and Maureen (Bill Gilmartin) Casey Jarman of Volcano, Hawaii; 1 son R. Dennis (Elizabeth) Casey; 10 grandchildren: 1 great granddaughter; 1 brother Lloyd E. Scherer, Jr. of Grand Marais, MN; 1 sister Lois Scherer of Fountain Hills, AZ and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a son William R. Casey on April 27, 1998, a great granddaughter Julie in 1994 and a close friend Hertel Fluent in 1990.
Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (September 17, 2003) at 11:00am. in the funeral home. Rev. Gary Larson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 2nd and Laurens St. Olean or to The Alzheimers Association of WNY 1284 French Road Depew, NY 14043.
