Mary L. "Tootsie" Diffenderfer
Olean, NY-- Mary L. "Tootsie" Diffenderfer of 119 King St. Olean, NY died Friday (October 4, 2002) in the Olean General Hospital after a long illness.
Born May 14, 1925 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of Clyde and Catherine Wilson Nenno. On February 22, 1944 she married Brenton H. Diffenderfer who predeceased her December 16, 1974.
Mrs. Diffenderfer had first attended school in Allegany and later graduated from Olean High School. As a resident of Olean most of her life, she had worked at various jobs including managing the kitchen of the Elk’s Club, working as a waitress at Ash’s Restaurant and as an employee of Frank’s Pharmacy, and later working for Stroehmann’s Bakery .
Mary was a member of the Elks Lodge, St. Stephen's Club and American Legion Auxiliaries. She was a former member of St. Mary of the Angels Church and she enjoyed cooking and baking. She especially enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas.
Surviving are 3 sons Jon Diffenderfer of Johnston Atoll, South Pacific, Raymond (Jeanne) Diffenderfer of Olean and Gordon O. (Terri) Diffenderfer of Allegany; a daughter-in-law Ann Marie Diffenderfer of Olean; 6 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; 3 brothers William (Sonya) Nenno of Mesa, Arizona and Clyde Nenno, Jr. and Leo (Patty) Nenno, both of Olean; 2 sisters Betty Wilson of Sun Lakes, Arizona and Theresa (Gordon) Meyers of Olean and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a son James B. Diffenderfer on December 2, 1994 and a step daughter Joan O'Keefe in 1988.
Friends will be received on Sunday from 7-9pm and on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. A prayer service will be held Tuesday (October 8, 2002) at 9:30am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
