Joan Marie Matrone
“Loving mother and grandmother”
El Paso, TX Joan Marie Matrone of El Paso, Texas and formerly of Allegany, passed away peacefully Monday (September 26, 2022) surrounded by her loved ones at her daughter Virginia’s home, at the age of 79.
Joan was the daughter of Francis and Agnes Bennett Ginter and was born March 25, 1943 in Olean.
On June 9, 1962 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Olean, she married the love of her life, John Paul Matrone, to whom she was married for 43 years until his passing on January 29, 2005.
She was a 1961 graduate of Allegany Central School where she excelled in music; her peers and teachers often quoted, “How charmingly sweet she sings.” She also attended St. Bonaventure University for a short period of time as an adult. Her love of music continued throughout her life and she taught herself to play the organ by ear. She entertained her family with her playing and beautiful voice. She also enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her loved ones. She hosted family get-togethers, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was an extraordinary caregiver for anyone in need.
While raising her children Joan worked at Tops Friendly Markets in Olean and later for Olean General Hospital as a registration clerk for 22 years until she retired to care for her husband, John.
Joan is survived by her siblings, Francis “Butch” Ginter of Allegany, George (Carol) Ginter of Russellville, Tennessee, William “Bill” (Companion Eileen) Ginter of Hinsdale and Mary Louser of Allegany. She also leaves behind her four children Tammy Powell of Lincolnton, NC, Virginia (Gustavo) Delatorre of El Paso, Texas, Michael (Tamra) Matrone of Stanley, NC and Suzanne (Raymond) Charles of Allegany. She is the grandmother of 9 grandchildren, Amber, Nicole, Amanda, Brittany, Daniel, Nathan, Hannah, Alexis and John, whom she loved dearly. She was also a great-grandmother to nine great-grandchildren. Additionally, she leaves behind several beloved members of her husband’s family, many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband, John, her sister and dear friend, Agnes “Sis” Streckfus, and her son-in-law, William “Billy” Powell.
Joan loved the Lord and attended Word of Life Church of El Paso, Texas, where she enjoyed celebrating and listening to her granddaughter, Brittany, sing and praise the Lord.
There will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held at the Allegany Cemetery and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY, 6400 Sheridan Dr. Suite 320, Amherst, NY 14221.
