ROBERT TROUTMAN posted a condolence
Monday, December 14, 2020
To the family and Friends of Joe, my sincerest condolences. From 8th to 12th grade, I have many fun recollections of him from shared classes, after school what have you and in school lunch breaks. The latter being so much fun due his gregarious and engaging nature. And what madcap fun - his ability to eat a rectangular ice cream sandwich in one bite, his organizing a betting pool as to the day when Francisco Franco would meet his maker, and the hours he/we in his inner circle poured over making his/our Top 40 forecasts, to only wait to see if Casey Kasem got it right and matched them. Again, he made life fun and always kept things upbeat. Good bye, Joe, you will be missed.

In 1992 I met the most genuine person ever - Joe Mecca. Over the years I learned a lot about Joe. Horses, Jeopardy, OTB, Scrabble, Saratoga, rescue dogs, travel, art .......... I also observed a lot of things - hard work, honesty, sympathy, empathy, love for Linda - and a few opinions.
Great heart. Great soul. Great man. Great friend.
I’ve heard it said that after some time you can look back and feel lucky to have had such a good friend. I already feel that way. It was an absolute honor to be able to call Joe Mecca my friend.

I would like to send out my heart-felt condolences to Joe's wife and my co-worker Linda at this time. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet Joe but I know he must have been an amazing man to have led such a life. To have been a hero in his community, by first reporting community news and then changing careers and being a state-trooper. And of course, to marrying such a spit-fire, beautiful wife. The story of the two of them rescuing greyhounds really touched me. A love story for the ages.

Det. Sgt. Clark Parry, Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office posted a condolence
Wednesday, December 9, 2020
When I first started working for the Sheriff's Office, I worked out of the Casino Division and was on the Interstate for a large part of my shifts. As Joe was assigned to the Interstate, we were together on countless traffic stops, accidents and many other types of adventures. I would often check on or back up Joe, and he would often do the same for me. When we were done with whatever jobs we were working on together, we would often spend quite a bit of time just chatting on the side of the road. Working in a rural county, we are often by ourselves which can make our dangerous job even more so dangerous. It was always reassuring to have Joe willing to help out, usually without being asked to do so. Joe and I had many laughs and conversations on the Interstate, and I have so many fond memories of him. He was a very good man, and I am tremendously saddened by his passing.

I met Joe when he came onboard at the Oneida Daily Dispatch. He'd just graduated from journalism school. The newsroom, a former supermarket, was large and open with desks paired facing one another. I was lucky enough to have Joe assigned to the desk across from me. I soon learned lots of things about Joe--he played pinochle every Friday night, he liked to bet on the horses, he kept several packages of Aunt Fanny's Pecan Twirls in the trunk of his car in case there was aculinary emergencies....and most importantly, that he was a heck of a writer, a shrewd observer of human foibles and a very loyal friend.
After we both left the Dispatch, Joe and I stayed in touch. He visited my family in Pennsylvania where he and I had a memorable tour of the very weird Fonthill Castle complete with a volunteer guide who spoke to the two of us as if we were elementary school children. After the two hour tour, we raced into the parking lot where I thought Joe was going to explode. I visited him in Alleghany where I met Linda and made a second friend.
Every Christmas he'd send me a long letter filled with his activities, trips, book recommendations and observations about life. I have kept every one. The writing and humor are masterful. I will so miss those letters and my dear, dear friend.

My deepest condolences to Linda and Joe's family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
I have many fine memories of Joe as an A-line partner in the NYSP and beyond into his retirement.
He was like the brother I never had and was always there when I needed any advice or help.
Joe was a good man, a good Trooper and a great friend. Rest in peace Joe.
