James Angelo Melaro
Hinsdale, NY James Angelo Melaro, 63, of Hinsdale, passed away Saturday (January 5, 2019) at the Olean General Hospital.
Born December 11, 1955 in Olean he was the son of Joan Kuzak Melaro Corson and the late Joseph J. Melaro.
Jim was a graduate of Olean High School and attended St. Bonaventure University. He began a career in sports journalism in 1984 with the Olean Times Herald and retired in 2018. He was the first recipient to receive "The Gil Stinger Award". He was passionate about youth sports and in watching and writing about students' successes. Years ago he established the Big 30 Athletic Fund for the purpose of raising scholarship money for student athletes.
Surviving are his loving companion Lori Clovis of Hinsdale; his mother and step-father Joan and Charles Corson of Olean; 2 daughters Vicki (Nick Williams) Melaro of Olean and Katie (Allen Weatherley) Melaro of Allegany; 6 grandchildren Jaden Melaro, Jillian Balcerzak, Skyler Melaro, Evan Weatherley, Calyn Weatherley and Cyler Weatherley; 1 brother Joseph (Laura) Melaro of Henderson, TN; 2 sisters Janice (Bob Blovsky) Melaro of Olean and Judy (Tom) Gavigan of Racine, WI; 2 step-sisters Amy (Mike) Kieta of Longs, SC and Meg (Todd) Thomas of Boca Raton, FL and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father he was predeceased by 2 sisters Joyce Ann Melaro and Jean Melaro Stout.
The family will be present to receive friends on Tuesday from 4-7pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. All are welcome to attend a Memorial Service that will be held on Wednesday (January 9, 2019) at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 109 S. Barry Street, Olean. Rev. Kim Rossi, rector, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
