Richard E. Birmingham
Rochester, NY Richard E. Birmingham of 79 Shell Edge Dr., formerly of Allegany, passed away Sunday (November 11, 2018) in St. John's Home in Rochester.
Born February 6, 1930 in Allegany he was the oldest of seven children born to Edward J. and Celestine Conlan Birmingham.
Richard was a 1947 graduate of Allegany High School where he excelled in football and baseball. After high school he served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1951.
He was employed by the Olean Times Herald prior to relocating to Rochester. He retired after 35 years as a pressman for Gannett Rochester Newspapers.
An outdoorsman, Richard loved golfing, hunting and spending time at his beloved camp on Sullivan Hollow.
Surviving are his wife Bernadine; 2 step-daughters Mimi (Fritz) Brado and Paula (Duke Potter) Moran; his step grandchildren, whom affectionately called him "Ra", Emily (Jason) Barnes, Kyle (Erika) Edwards, Zachary Brado, Matthew Moran, Caitlin (Eli Pessin) Moran and Jennifer Moran; his step great-grandchildren Hannah Barnes, Samantha Barnes and Henry Edwards; 2 brothers Jerry Birmingham and Kevin Birmingham and many nieces, nephews and cousins, including his devoted cousin Cliff Hogan and family.
He was predeceased by 4 siblings Marjorie Kettle, Donna Mae Furnia, Helen Birmingham and Thomas Birmingham and a nephew "Chip" Collins.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 4-7pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. A prayer service will be held Friday (November 16, 2018) at 11am in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
