Dan and I got acquainted first in September 1953 in St. Ignatius (then High School), he seated in the seat behind me. I met his parents in Oak Park, on a visit from my home in Chicago's "West Side", learned about his dad's printing business. We took in movies together in downtown Chicago. I remember how upset he got with me when I showed up a little late, but not so late that we missed anything of the movie! We wrote back and forth to each, while he was teaching. My involvement with a San Diego production of "HMS Pinafore" amused him, when I sent him a video of our preview performance for some special children, who uttered loud shouts from their seats in places they should have been quiet. Dan came to visit my family in San Diego, some years before he passed away. I didn't realize then how lucky I was to still meet and talk with him in person. I admired his writing and speaking abilities. He mailed long, fascinating letters from New York. God rest his soul.
