Lawrence M. Gallets
"Beloved father and grandfather"
Olean, NY-- Lawrence M. Gallets of 1101 Delaware Ave., formerly of S. 7th St. died Wednesday (February 18, 2009) in The Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Olean after a brief illness.
Born January 10, 1924 in Olean, NY he was the son of Lawrence and Dorothy McGrath Gallets. On May 3, 1953 at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany he married June M. Threehouse who died March 15, 2006.
Mr. Gallets was a 1941 graduate of Allegany High School. He attended St. Bonaventure University for one year prior to enlisting in the US Army. He served during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in New Guinea, the Philippines and Indonesia, ending his service as a corporal. He first worked for the Franchot Oil Co. In 1958 he began a 30 year career with Dexter Hysol Co. in Olean as a lab technician, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean and was a former member of the American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892 of Allegany. He enjoyed fishing and reading. His big passion was St. Bonaventure University basketball where he attended games faithfully for 40 years.
Surviving are 2 sons Steve (Beverly) Gallets of Waco, TX and Tom "Fuzzy" (Kathy O'Malley) Gallets of Olean; 2 granddaughters Katherine Gallets and Carolyn Gallets both of Waco, TX and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by 1 brother Thomas Gallets in 1948.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Sunday from 2-5pm. Funeral services will be held Monday (February 23, 2009) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with full military honors being accorded by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Church Building Fund.
