Kath's extraordinary life will continue to spread love and light through all the stories and memories of those she touched. I feel lucky to have been one of those people and will cherish the memories and do my best to honor her feisty spirit. Sending love and blessings.

I worked with Kath in the 1980s when she was at the Peace Council and I was a staffer with the Rochester Peace and Justice Education Center. She always impressed me with her spirited work for human and social progress. (I'm happy, as well, to see that gifts in her memory will go to a Palestinian cause. A fitting tribute to Kath and her deep sense of conscience.)

Kath was one of the most amazing people I ever met. She had an indomitable spirit, great sense of humor, and devoted herself to life of service. She was, in my mind, a cheerleader for life and all that's good. I feel lucky I knew her.

The pure voice of intelligent justice, leadership, unflinching courage and reason has been hushed but Kath's kind, joyous, sisterly, inclusive, and welcoming spirit will stay with me forever. I'll see you on the other side my friend

Jerry--I'm glad we ran into each other back in November so Kath's death didn't come as a total shock, only a very sad one. Her life of conscience and commitment and courage will always hold a place in my heart. Take comfort in knowing you raised a daughter who truly made this world a better place as she "walked the walk." My sympathy and love go out to you, Mary Hamilton

Kath Buffington was a model to all nonviolent progressive political activists. Her tax resistance inspired many. I recall once that I received a check from Kath. She said that my activism must have involved many long distance calls (in the day when one paid by the minute for long distance calls), and she was sending me some money from what she would have paid in taxes to cover those costs! Always one to think independently and to care for others, she has left her imprint on me and on many activists whom I admire. She was an organizer extraordinaire, and I marveled how, whenever I brought a speaker to Olean from some far-flung part of the U.S., invariably they knew Kath and knew of her work. When I left on sabbatical and needed someone to teach my nonviolence class, Kath filled in. She is missed, but her example and spirit live on.

Please accept our sincere condolences. May the words quoted from this song bring you a measure of comfort as it did for us. ”If a man or woman should die, can they live again? Hear the promise God has made: He will call; The dead will answer. They shall live at his command. For he will have a longing For the work of his own hand. So have faith, and do not wonder, For our God can make us stand. And we shall live forever, As the work of his own hand ”(Job 14:13-15)

Kath led such a full, amazing, energetic life and touched so many people in so many ways that writing her obituary was a truly daunting task. Thanks to those who assisted in the full obituary which will appear here soon. If anyone needs a family contact, you may contact me (Kath's sister) at ABUFFLG@gmail.com

I am saddened beyond words at Kath’s passing. We first met in the Fall of 1969 when both of us were freshman at Syracuse University. She married my roommate; the marriage didn’t survive but our friendship did and in October of 1979 she introduced me to the woman whom I would marry. Throughout the 46 years after our first meeting, Kath remained one of my very dearest friends. Our lives took different paths and we didn’t see each other often over the past fifteen years, but we spoke several times per year. No matter how lousy she was feeling…and sadly, she often felt lousy due to her many health problems…she was always upbeat and could always make me smile when we talked. As I conveyed to Lynn, most of us attempt to “make a difference” by fitting it in here and there among everything else that goes on in our lives, but Kath devoted her life to making a difference. It was a life that was with meaning, honor, and deserving of great pride. We should all so be so fortunate at the end of our days to claim the same for ourselves. And so, to Kath’s family I extend my deepest sympathy and to my very dear friend Kath I thank you for having been a special part of my life. May you now be in a place that offers the peace and love you so wanted for our world. Love always...
