Obituary of John Schoonover

John F. Schoonover, Sr. Allegany, NY John F. Schoonover, Sr. of 1779 Gargoyle Rd. passed away suddenly Monday (February 23, 2015) at his home. Born May 25, 1926 in Port Allegany, PA he was the son of Franklyn Perry and Ida May Lewis Schoonover. On October 30, 1948 at the Cuba Baptist Church he married Dorothy M. Clayson who survives. Mr. Schoonover had served from 1944 to 1946 with the US Army in the European theatre during WWII. He had worked as a truck driver most of his life, retiring from LTL Transportation Co. in Olean. He was a former member of the Teamsters Union Local #649 and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on cars and machines. Surviving besides his wife are 2 children Patricia (Todd) Smith of Middlebury, IN and Denise (Donald) Calkins of Allegany; 9 grandchildren; (19) great grandchildren; 1 sister Emogene Barth of Bradford, PA and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Cheryl Lynn Champagne; a son John F. Schoonover, Jr.; a stepdaughter Diane Smathers and several brothers and sisters. Friends will be received on Friday (February 27, 2015) from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. A funeral service will begin at 1:00pm in the funeral home and will be followed by full military honors to be accorded at the funeral home by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
