Dennis J. Amore Loving Husband, Father & PaPa Friendship, NY Dennis J. Amore, 63, of 9 South Branch Street died Thursday, (October 31, 2013) at the Olean General Hospital of an apparent heart attack. Born May 19, 1950 in Olean he was the son of Anthony and K. Ramona Amore. On November 24, 1972 at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany he married Rebecca Stayer who survives. Denny was a 1968 graduate of Allegany Central School where he played football and was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year. He was a member of the 1967 co-champs of the Border League football team. He also played baseball, which carried over to playing the Alle-Catt Leagues to which he was chosen an all-star in 1968 & 1969. After high school he went on to St. Bonaventure University. While there he played club football and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education in 1972. Denny taught for one year in the Syracuse School System after which he and his wife decided to move back home closer to family. He then began teaching at Friendship Central School for the next 39 years. Along with teaching he coached soccer, basketball and softball. He and his teams compiled over 300 wins, three sectional titles and many county titles in softball. Denny also directed class plays for several years. In 1995 he became Athletic Director. He was also the county softball coordinator for several years. In 2007 Denny was elected into the Allegany County Athletic Hall of Fame. After 40 years of teaching, he retired from teaching and coaching in 2011. For six years he was vice-president of the Friendship Little League and also umpired for fifteen years. Denny was chairman for the St. Jude Bike-A-Thon for ten years. He organized the Friendship Central School Sports Boosters in 1996 and was also the Recreation Director for the Town of Friendship for many years. Denny had been a member of St. John's Church in Vandalia and was currently attending Holy Family Parish in Belmont. Surviving besides Becky, his wife of 40 years, are his three children, Tiffany (Timothy) Pompeo of Lake View, Jason (Kara) Amore of Louisville, Kentucky and Edward (Dani Stanbro) Amore of Belfast; his grandchildren, whom he loved so much, Haley, Hannah and Timmy Pompeo and Julian Amore; two brothers, Joseph (Susan) Amore of Groton and Michael (Gerda) Amore of Allegany; a sister Christine (Jeff) Mason of Allegany and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. Friends will be received on Sunday from 2-8pm at the Casey Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 NYS RT 417 West State Road, Olean. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday (November 4, 2013) at 12:30pm at St. Bonaventure Church, 95 East Main Street in Allegany. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany.
