Allegany, NY James Richard Carls of 220 E. Main St. passed away Tuesday (September 17, 2013) at The Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center, Olean after a short illness. Born June 17, 1923 in Allegany he was the son of Richard F. and Veronica Nenno Carls. On September 18, 1948 at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Wolcott he married Orma Bloomingdale who predeceased him March 4, 2011. Mr. Carls was a graduate of Allegany High School and had served with the US Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He had been employed for the New York Telephone Co. for 34 years when he retired as Central Office Foreman in 1980. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and the Telephone Pioneers. He belonged to the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892, the Allegany Knights of Columbus Council 1220 and the Olean Rod and Gun Club. He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman and especially enjoyed raising fox hounds and fox hunting for sport. Surviving are six children Pamela Carls of Sunnyvale, CA, Richard (Mary) Carls and Virginia Carls, both of Allegany, Elizabeth (Lawrence) Crisafulli of Arlington, TX, John Carls of Florida and Timothy Carls of Colorado; 13 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by a son Patrick Carls; a daughter Mary Carls and a sister Geraldine Lepine. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday (September 21, 2013) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with full military honors being provided by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team. Memorials may be made to the Allegany American Legion, PO Box 233 Allegany, NY 14706 or to the Olean VFW Post 1619, PO Box 457 Olean, NY 14760.
