Olean, NY Walter Leon Whipple, 88, of 217 Orchard Avenue, formerly of Bolivar, passed away unexpectedly Sunday (February 10, 2013) in his home.
Born August 2, 1924 in Middletown he was the son of Burnell and Ruth Holmes Whipple. On December 28, 1946 he married Betty A. Presher with whom he recently celebrated sixty six years of marriage.
Mr. Whipple was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He formerly resided in Florida for several years and after moving back to Bolivar, worked for Air Preheater Co. in Wellsville prior to his retirement. He had been residing in Olean for the past two and a half years.
He was a longtime member of the Richburg First Day Baptist Church and enjoyed staying involved in veteran activities in the area. He enjoyed fishing and was an alumni of the '41-'42 Football Club.
Surviving besides his wife are one son Walter Richard (Donna) Whipple of Bolivar; one grandson Andrew (Tiffany L.) Whipple of Olean; one sister Rose Ide of Georgia and several nieces and nephews. He was looking forward to the birth of his first great granddaughter.
He was predeceased by four brothers Lyman Whipple, Robert Whipple, Dick Whipple and Jack Whipple, Sr. and one sister Dorothy Carlson.
Visitation, announced for Thursday at the funeral home, has been cancelled. Friends will be received on Friday (February 15, 2013) at the Richburg First Day Baptist Church from 10:00am until time of services at 11:00am. Pastor Larry Allen will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Richburg First Day Baptist Church, Main St. Richburg, NY 14774.
