Obituary of Dr. Henry Carls

Dr. Henry P. Carls Allegany, NY Dr. Henry P. Carls of 4283 Wing Hollow Rd. died Wednesday (July 25, 2012) at the Olean General Hospital. Born May 26, 1934 in Allegany he was the son of George and Alice Corcoran Carls. On May 21, 1960 in Brockway, PA he married Judith Jetty who predeceased him January 7, 2001. Dr. Carls was a 1952 graduate of Allegany High School and received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University. He began medical school at Georgetown but suspended that pursuit for service with the US Army's Surgical MASH Unit in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. He then completed medical school and soon began a career as a general surgeon at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Buffalo, serving part of that time as Chief of Surgery. After retirement, he made his home back in Allegany and in recent years split his time between there and Florida. He will be remembered as a generous man, charitable in many ways and a teacher of life skills to family and friends and of medical skills to aspiring young doctors. A unique part of his nurturing character stemmed from the rural upbringing that he was proud of and that he carried with him all of his life. Dr. Carls was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and was an avid outdoorsman who loved golfing, hunting and fishing and also playing cards. Surviving are his four children Karen (Scott) Jones of Clarence, Linda (Kent) Thomas of Hillsborough, NC, James (Dina) Carls of Ellicottville and Thomas (Hillary) Carls of Bozeman, MT; seven grandchildren Lauren, Kelsey, Zachary, Callie, Cecelia, Emmylu and Coleman; one brother James (Joanne) Carls of Allegany; a sister-in-law Geraldine Sundell of Ridgeway, PA and several nephews and a niece. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by an infant brother George Carls. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 4 to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday (July 28, 2012) at 12:30pm in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. A private burial service will be held Monday in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
