Irene M. Stephan
Allegany, NY Irene M. Stephan, 90, formerly of Allegany, passed away Saturday (July 7, 2012) at St. Ann's Community Health Care Center in Rochester. She had recently been residing at the home of her daughter in Rochester.
Born October 20, 1921 in Allegany she was the daughter of Jacob and Lenora Collins Grader. In December 1944 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina she married Roy G. Stephan who predeceased her February 24, 1982.
Mrs. Stephan was a lifelong resident of Allegany and graduated from St. Elizabeth Academy in 1939. She then received her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1941.
She had first been employed as a registered nurse by the former St. Francis Hospital and later for the former St. Joseph's Manor in Olean. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and its Altar Society. She enjoyed baking and reading and, as a compassionate caregiver, was a former volunteer for Hospice.
Surviving are three sons Edward R. (Helen) Stephan of McLean, VA, Philip Stephan of Allegany and Mark (LaValle) Stephan of Macedon; one daughter Ellen Shattuck of Rochester; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by one brother Thomas Grader.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Tuesday from 5pm until 8pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (July 11, 2012) beginning with a prayer service at 9:00am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
