Bernard P. "Bernie" Scanlon Allegany, NY Bernie P. "Bernie" Scanlon, 79, died Thursday (January 12, 2012) in the Olean General Hospital following a long illness. Born December 5, 1932 in Carbondale, PA he was the son of John and Anna McGuire Scanlon. From 1942 to 1970 he lived in Olean with his second cousin and her husband, Madelyn and Al Seyller. On July 25, 1970 at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany, he married the former Ann M. Scarlato, who survives. Bernie was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Olean, class of 1949 and a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1952. He served in the US Navy from January 1953 to January 1957 and was stationed in Portsmouth, VA and on the USS Preserver. He was primarily employed as a machinist at Dresser- Rand (formerly known as Clark Brothers and Dresser-Clark) for forty three years, starting in November 1951 and retiring in February 1994. Bernie, a former member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, has been a member of St. Bonaventure Church since 1970 and was a recipient along with his wife of The Francis Medal in 2006. He was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks #491 and a member of the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post #892. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed following the NY Yankees, Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, Notre Dame Football team and St. Bonaventure University men's basketball team. He had been a Bona Athletic Fund (BAF) backer since its inception. Surviving are his wife and several nieces and a nephew. Besides his parents and Madelyn and Al Seyller, Bernie was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law John T. and Joan Bender Scanlon and a nephew BJ Scanlon. There will be no public visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bonaventure Church to be celebrated by Fr. James Vacco, OFM, on Saturday (January 14, 2012) at 11:00am. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Allegany Area Historical Association, Allegany Fire Department, Allegany Public Library, SPCA of Cattaraugus County or to the St. Bonaventure Church Memorial Fund.
