John F. "Jack" Dougherty
Olean, NY John F. "Jack" Dougherty of 209 S. 13th St. died Monday (February 7, 2011) in the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Born August 22, 1924 in Houston, TX he was the son of Francis and Catherine Lawler Dougherty. On November 16, 1948 in Our Lady of Lord Church in Arlington, VA he married Kathleen Ann Strapp who predeceased him January 4, 2010.
Mr. Dougherty had served with the U.S. Navy during WWII in both the North Atlantic and South Pacific Theatres. He was first employed in the construction trade and later worked for twenty years for the Olean Fire Department. He also owned and operated the Don-Ra Restaurant in East Olean.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, the St. Stephen's Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Olean VFW Post #1619. His interests included hunting, fishing, "The Camp" and Buffalo Bills football.
Surviving are four children Francis M. (Kathleen) Dougherty of Rochester, Daniel P. (Jacqueline) Dougherty of Cuba and Brian T. Dougherty of Olean; one daughter Anne M. (Bruce) Bush of Ovid, NY; ten grandchildren Kate (Dennis) Basila, Matt (Alexandra) Dougherty, Nate (Adrienne) Dougherty, Molly Dougherty, Shannon (David) LaGarda, Pat (Amber) Dougherty, Jennifer Bush, Kevin Dougherty, Samantha Dougherty and Kyle Dougherty; six great grandchildren Jack and Max Basila, Nicolas and Mia Dougherty and Charley and Henry Dougherty; one sister Elizabeth "Betty" Faso of Galena, OH and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by one brother Donald Dougherty.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Thursday (February 10, 2011) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians will conduct a memorial service in the funeral home Wednesday evening at 7:30pm. Memorials may be made to the Olean VFW Post #1619 or to the Ancient Order of Hibernians Scholarship Fund.
