"Matriarch of five generations"
Olean, NY Gertrude G. !McGinnity, 101, of 130 E. Forest Avenue died peacefully Sunday (July 24, 2005) in her home.
Born November 24, 1903 in Chipmonk, NY she was the daughter of Constantine T. and Margaret Gladney !McCabe. On May 2, 1926 at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany she married Edward H. !McGinnity who predeceased her July 12, 1975.
Mrs. !McGinnity was raised in Chipmonk and attended a one room schoolhouse prior to moving to Olean at the age of fourteen.
She was a member of St. John's Church in Olean and was a former member of its Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a former member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She loved following Buffalo Bills football, was an avid Yankee's fan and enjoyed playing bingo.
Surviving are a daughter Elizabeth "Betty" Palumbo with whom she resided; 3 grandsons Daniel (!MaryLou) Palumbo, Thomas (Judy) Palumbo, James (!MaryAnn) Palumbo; 4 granddaughters Kathleen (Stephen) Pachla, Suzanne Palumbo and Mary Palumbo, all of Olean; 12 great grandchildren; 4 great great granddaughters; a sister Veronica "Babe" Nenno of !DeBary, FL and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by 3 brothers Constantine !McCabe in 1961, Richard !McCabe in 1975 and Edward !McCabe in 1989; 4 sisters including her twin Loretta !McCabe in 1987, Josephine !McCabe in 1990, Margaret O'Meara in 1990 and Agnes Dieteman in 1995 and a son-in-law John B. Palumbo in 2004.
There will be no prior public visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Tuesday (July 26, 2005) at 10:30am in St. John's Church. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. John's Church or to the Walsh Foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.
